Hello Mr. Gänzl,

I am a genealogist and have recently made a connection to the Vinning family in Devonshire to which Louisa Vinning "the Infant Sappho" belongs. My client is descended from William Vinning, cordwainer, who would have been Louisa's grandfather. She is specifically looking for a Jewish ancestor, but no luck so far. You mention that Louisa Vinning had some Jewish heritage. I assume this was based on the name of her possible great grandmother, Mary Solomon. We wondered what your sources are for this connection and if there is any information showing that Mary Solomon's family was originally Jewish. We are not questioning your research, just grasping at genealogical straws as I have not been able to find any other possible Jewish ancestor. You might be interested to know that Louisa Vinning's great aunt Mary, ended up emigrating to Australia, and that Mary Vinning's daughter from her first marriage married Edwin James King and died in Johnsonville, Wellington, NZ in 1919. Meanwhile Mary Vinning's daughter from her third ?marriage?, Amelia Sherwin, married George Oats Crowther in 1877 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand and they were the parents of Frank Crowther whom his great niece Kerry Louise Harrison [NZ author of the book Wahine] describes as a "'famous musician, pianist, orchestra conductor, ladies' man ... who never married and could talk, drink, smoke and play the piano brilliantly. The King family [see burial entry] may have helped with his piano instruction.' Given your interests in both music and genealogy, I hope you will find this information interesting and help us in our quest to find Tara a Jewish ancestor. If you have any helpful information or are interested in any more details of the Vinning/Crowther connection, please contact me. ... Lisa MJ

Hello Lisa. You can write to me at ganzl@xtra.co.nz. I shall try to dig up my old note for the VICTORIAN VOCALISTS chapter. Cheers Kurt
